Hello there. First post.

We would like to run a dedicated game server on our OpenBSD 3.6 server.

Some game companies (id, Valve, Bioware) support Linux with dedicated
server binaries, but I've never seen one for *BSD. Is there a way to
make the Linux servers for Neverwinter Nights, UT2004, or Half-Life 2
run on OpenBSD?

I'm running several game servers on OpenBSD.
Half-Life(2), Quake3, Call of Duty, QuakeWorld, Quake2 will work.
I think the others will work too, but i haven't used any of them yet.

Well, Robert say OpenBSD is good for game servers.
I don't play with game servers on OpenBSD, but i think is good if Robert
say.

Definitely. Nethack runs, Angband runs, Crossfire runs ;-)

I once ran a linux bbs with dos doors using dosemu (lord, usurpers, tradewars).

Would a linux emulated dosemu for OpenBSD be the best solution to
mimick the same behavior in BSD?

Try it. Report back.

FreeBSD have game servers. Check the ports tree /usr/ports/games

OpenBSD don't have game servers. Anyway, you need linux emulation to run
this servers and much work.

BTW. If you want to run QuakeWorld servers
you can build a native binary from source
and I think this should work with Quake2 too.

I've been running a NeverWinter Nights server on OpenBSD using linux
emulation for well over a year. It has proven considerably more stable
than some of the servers I've played in the past, running on a native
installation. Heh. That tickles me to no end. :)

Our colo is only 1U at the moment, and its primary purpose is running
apache/php/mysql, hence our choice of OpenBSD for security reasons. We
were going to run a game server for value added fun if it wouldn't
interfere too much with the primary function of webhosting.

I'm getting conflicting signals from the venerable listmembers. I guess
we'll try it. If it doesn't work, or eats too many CPU cycles, then
it's out.

Thanks for the replies.

P.S. Why do I get all the messages from this list out of order?
I _HIGHLY_ recommend you stick to the native platform for game servers.
There is little need for the 'secure by default' position of OpenBSD on
something as trivial as a game server, and you will avoid a large number
of emulation gotchas and bugs. It's really not worth it.

If you're not too selective on which games your server will serve,
have a look at huntd(6) :-)
