Palm Software for OpenBSD?

Hi,

Some weeks ago I replaced the Windows Installation on my Notebook with
OpenBSD 3.1. Everything works perfect. My only problem ist to find a
software to use my Palm m505(USB) under OpenBSD. On freshmeat I found
different Software for Linux. The only software I found for BSD
systems is coldsync, but it doesen't seem to be very comfortable.

Now my question is: What software are you using to run a Palm under
OpenBSD? Emulated Linux software?

I'm grateful for every tip
Markus

Sorry.. that's mostly development stuff for palm.
You should always do a: make search key=whateveryoursearchingfor

ie.

cd /usr/ports && make search key=palm

Jpilot is a good piece of syncing software, as well as gnome-pilot. You
wont have to modify your kernel to allow the USB cradle and
device to comunicate with the OpenBSD machine, as the option is set in
the GENERIC kernel...but for the Handspring VISOR. I have never owned a
real palm, only a visor, so I dont know if it works the same way as far as
the system detecting and configuring the device....

Hi,

(this is all from memory, may contain errors...)

There's two things you need; something to syncronise the palm with your machine and then a 'Palm desktop' type application.

For the second I usually use JPilot, it's the proverbial ugly UNIX app but is pretty good. JPilot comes with pilot-link for syncing purposes, this is where the fun starts. Pilot-link worked fine for my Palm V (Palm OS 3 with serial connection) and apparently it works OK for Handsprings (Palm OS 3 with USB) but I never got it going with my Clie (Palm OS 4 with USB). Apparently PO4 (like your M505) has a different syncing protocol. Newer versions of pilot-link may work, it's been a short while since I last tried.

Cold-sync is an alternative to pilot-link, and can be persuaded to work with JPilot. Again, I didn't get it working with my Clie but I think it should be do-able, I was never sure if it wasn't working or I wasn't doing it right. Coldsync is mostly a Linux project since most people that use it are Linux people, but there are a few FreeBSD people on the Coldsync list. I keep meaning to have a more serious go at getting Coldsync working on OpenBSD - unless of course, it's turned up in the ports since then.

Good luck,
Duncan
